EXCHANGE OF IDEAS: Director of Collegiate Education K. Lakshminarayana, chairman of Amara Raja group, Galla Ramachandra Naidu and SVU vice-chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy at a workshop in Tirupati.
After reorientation and refresher courses, the catchword now is `repositioning.' The Directorate of Collegiate Education has embarked on a massive operation to brush up the minds of the lecturers working in Government and private aided colleges in the State. The idea is to equip the lecturers with information pertaining to their subjects and help them keep abreast of the changes taking place on a daily basis due to globalisation. The ambitious programme was inaugurated at Tirupati by Director of Collegiate Education K. Lakshminarayana and the first in the series of workshops, `Repositioning of Higher Education in Andhra Pradesh', was held on January 6 and 7 here for the benefit of economics lecturers working in Sri Venkateswara and Sri Krishna Devaraya universities. Mr. Lakshmi Narayana opined that the academic standards at the degree level were highly incommensurate with the knowledge levels needed to help the students land a lucrative job in the private sector and expressed the hope that the series of workshops would help hone the teaching skills of lecturers and enable them to get their ideas across effectively. SVU Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy stressed the need to alter the curriculum as part of introducing reforms in higher education, while executive chairman of Amara Raja Group Galla Ramachandra Naidu sought a more congenial environment for institute-industry interaction.
