Corporation to revamp waste treatment plant

Staff Reporter

Proposal to improve facilities at dumping site

  • Council to meet on Wednesday
  • Proposal to seek help to establish green belt
  • New plan for drainage

Kozhikode: As part of its model solid waste management project, the Kozhikode Corporation has drawn up several proposals to revamp the garbage waste treatment plant and improve infrastructure facilities at the dumping site at Njelianparamba on the outskirts of the city.

Officials said that the city council was planning to seek the assistance of the Social Forestry Wing of the Forest and Wildlife Department, Agricultural University and the Department of Agriculture to establish a green belt at the garbage dumping ground. This proposal was in fact one of the suggestions put forward by the Corporation when the residents of the Njelianparamba in the Nallalam-Cheruvannur gramapanchayat were up in arms demanding shifting of the garbage dumping grounds from their region.

The Corporation and the Pollution Control Board are jointly implementing the multi-crore model solid waste management project in the city.

The council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss these issues and take a final decision on them, officials said.

Based on a decision taken by the project monitoring committee, K. Jayachandran of the College of Engineering, Thrissur, has already submitted a report for modernising the existing treatment plant. The funds needed for the purpose and its allotment have also been prepared. Another proposal is to invite tenders for renovating the drainage network at the landfill site.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had on an earlier occasion directed the Corporation to recondition the drains flowing from the treatment plant to other areas.

New schemes have also been envisaged for sustaining and maintaining the garbage treatment at Njelianparamba following an appraisal of the Execution Committee and the Monitoring Committee of the project.

Roofs for the treatment plant will be erected in a time bound manner. Construction of windrows and its platforms will also be given priority. Redesigning the roofs is another fresh proposal. This is to be done based on a plan worked out by an architect. Besides, the drainages will also be given a facelift.

An earth-cushion, 30-cm thick, will be laid on the eastern side of the site. This will help in the collection of garbage and easy movement of vehicles. The foundation for the engineering landfill site had been raised since it was almost in the same level as that of the water table.

Steps will also be taken for acquiring land for establishing the green belt and a park on the western side of the site. Similarly, a bund will be constructed after digging out the garbage at the landfill site, officials said.
