Congratulations

The Hindu is synonymous with ethical journalism. Appointment of a Readers' Editor is another golden feather in its cap. As a reader of two decades, I have observed that it accepts both constructive criticism and encomiums with equal ease.

Devadas K. Nair,
Aluva, Kerala

Congratulations to The Hindu and the Editor-in-Chief for setting an example in good journalistic practice. As one committed to the highest standards of the profession and fully conversant with the newspaper's traditions, K. Narayanan is an ideal choice for the position.

B.R.P. Bhaskar,
Bangalore

Mr. Narayanan, who has more than 50 years experience in The Hindu , is an excellent choice. We hope the ombudsman will fulfil his role to the readers' satisfaction.

A.J. Rangarajan,
Chennai

The Hindu has appointed the first Readers' Editor at an appropriate time. The post is a mirror, which will reflect the paper's image and afford scope for correction where necessary.

V. Visweswara Rao,
Vizianagaram, A.P.

In the history of Indian journalism, The Hindu has carved a niche for itself. This has been possible because of its qualitative approach to the communication process. Its sense of social responsibility and commitment to journalistic principles have been appreciated by all right-thinking people in India and abroad. By taking the unique step of institutionalising the practice of self-regulation, The Hindu has set an example for improving the platform and purpose of one of the great pillars of democracy.

E.P. Menon,
Bangalore

Those of us who knew Mr. Narayanan as News Editor of The Hindu will certainly endorse N. Ram's description of him as the "quintessential professional for more than half a century, showing great commitment and integrity."

J.N. Iyer,
Chennai

The appointment will shore up the bond between the newspaper and its millions of readers. Indeed, it is a value addition that is most welcome.

P.K. Varadarajan,
Chennai

A versatile man of great humility, the former News Editor is like Fr. Ehrhart who, as warden of Clive's Hostel, St. Joseph's College, lavished kindness on the inmates during study hours though he was unsparing. The ability of both to identify persons with names after years is remarkable.

P. Sundaresan,
Chennai

Mr. Narayanan's task will be quite Herculean. He should be backed up by a small advisory group consisting of well meaning individuals from a cross section of society.

B.R. Kumar,
Chennai

Given Mr. Narayanan's vast experience in journalism, there is no doubt the readers' voice will get properly reflected. The Hindu deserves to be praised in its efforts at transparency.

S. Kannan,
Chennai

Hearty congratulations on Mr. Narayanan's appointment. It is a splendid move and in the right direction. I wish the Mount Road Maha Vishnu every success. I have no doubt that the Readers' Editor will be a true guardian of The Hindu .

Bill Maniss,
Chicago, Illinois

Alongside the editorial policy and contents, readers' views and comments enrich the effectiveness of a newspaper and sharpen debate. I hope to see the impact of the latest move on The Hindu in the days ahead.

S. Subramanyan,
Mumbai

The move, one hopes, is a sign of many more steps to come. The terms of reference are indeed comprehensive. The appointment of a Readers' Editor promises better readership.

P. Mohan Sachdev,
Dehra Dun
