Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The Pondicherry Government has signed Memorandums of Understanding with non-governmental organisations and the Government of Maharashtra for construction of houses in 22 tsunami-hit villages in the Union Territory. The Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, B.V. Selvaraj, said in a release here recently that as many as 13 MoUs were finalised and around 5,000 houses would be built for the tsunami-hit people. The Secretary to Union Home Ministry (Border Management and Disaster Management) D.K. Sankaran, visited Pondicherry last week and held discussions with the Lt. Governor, M.M. Lakhera, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, the Chief Secretary, C.S. Khairwal, and also officials of the Project Implementation Agency and Collectors of Pondicherry and Karaikal districts and reviewed the progress of work done in the tsunami ravaged areas. Dr. Sankaran appreciated the proposal of the Pondicherry Administration to constitute Rescue and Relief Volunteers' team for disaster preparedness in Pondicherry. Dr Sankaran later visited Pudhukuppam (Moorthikuppam) village and saw the pace of construction of houses by the SOS Children's Villages of India.
