PONDICHERRY: Under a central scheme, all police stations in Pondicherry will be computerised in a phased manner.

Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA), an initiative by the Central Government under the National e-Governance Policy, aims at automating the work force at police stations and reducing paper works.

"All works, including registration of complaints and FIR would be computerised. One of the highlights of the computerisation is that it reduces the scope for tampering with information once a case is registered. The system is such that the information first entered in the computer cannot be changed at any point," P.R. Meena, IGP, told The Hindu .

Estimate for the work had been sent to the National Informatics Centre, which would take up the work, he added.

The Grand Bazar police station would be the first to have the facility in Pondicherry. "It would be on an experimental basis," he said.

Later, in the first phase, which is expected to start in the beginning of the coming financial year, ten per cent of the police stations would be covered and the rest in the second phase. There are a total of 28 police stations in the Union Territory.

The computerisation process would also include facility for voice video recording of investigation, he said.

The Police department has also entered into an understanding with the Pondicherry Engineering College to train constables in operating computers.

Already two batches have completed training.
