Undertrials held after hot chase

Harish and Kumar scaled the wall of the jail using a rope suspended from the side of the fort

MADIKERI: In a daring attempt, two undertrials who tried to escape from the district jail in the early hours of Sunday, were chased and caught by the jail personnel, alert public and a police constable.

T.V. Harish, who is facing charges of murder, and Kumara alias Shiva Kumar, who is facing charges of theft, were among the inmates who were let out of their cell on Sunday morning to relieve themselves. But Harish and Kumar started climbing the wall of the jail using a rope suspended from the side of the fort, sources said.

Chandra, a jail staff, saw the two trying to escape and shouted at them to stop. But the two succeed in scaling the 60-ft wall and jumped into the fort area. Mr. Chandra, Naveen and Hattur, jail staff, started chasing them. They were joined by Satish, a police constable, and Uthappa, a civilian, who caught Harish near the Indane Gas Agency. Harish tried to escape by throwing sand into the eyes of Mr. Chandra and punched him repeatedly. But he was overpowered by the others.

Kumar was caught by Mr. Naveen and Mr. Hattur near a hotel on the Kohinoor Road with the help of people, sources said. Both have been handed over to the Madikeri city police for investigation.

Harish, who hails from Madapur in Somwarpet taluk, is accused of burgling a jewellery showroom in Kushalnagar and murdering the driver of a car he had hired. He was jailed on May 10, 2004.

Kumar, who hails from Kerala, is facing charges of theft. He was lodged in the jail on August 4, 2005.

Suspect

The jail personnel said they have information about the person who tried to help the two to escape by letting down the rope. They are on the look out for the person, who is at large.
