Coimbatore: A hostel for girls and another one for scheduled caste boys are being constructed at Bharathiar University, according to Vice-Chancellor S. Sivasubramanian. In his welcome address at the 21st convocation of the varsity recently, he said that the girls' hostel would have 96 rooms and the boys' hostel was coming up at a cost of Rs. 1.63 crores. With larger numbers of women students being admitted during the past few years, the authorities were building 22 additional rooms for them with funds sanctioned by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The construction was nearing completion. A building for a medical centre was ready. Syndicate member and Emeritus Scientist at the university Usha K. Metha had funded the construction of an air-conditioned auditorium capable of seating 1,000 persons. A clock tower and entrance arches were coming up as part of the efforts to improve the campus grounds. To promote equal opportunity and ensure high quality education, the UGC had sanctioned a satellite interactive terminal facility that could be used by all the affiliated colleges of the university. At four workshops conducted last year, teachers had received orientation on creating electronic content. Bharathiar University had participated in the India Education Fair, organised in Mauritius, during October last year. About 300 students had expressed interest in doing their higher studies at the university. Prof. Sivasubramanian had been invited to address educational administrators and representatives of the Government at an educational fair held in Sri Lanka.
