Compulsory `social orientation' component coming
|
CHENNAI:
The Syndicate of Madras University has agreed to the introduction of "a social orientation component" as a compulsory part of the undergraduate curriculum. The evaluation criteria for the social orientation element and the number of papers in each semester will be decided by the Academic Council, said S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor.
"This element will be outside the curriculum and mostly field-oriented. It will seek to build the capacity of our students and provide inputs for his or her social service and social analysis capabilities," he said.
The Academic Council is meeting in March 2006 to decide other details of the new element.
"We now have field activities such as National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps, the Red Cross or sports. We are planning a few more areas which will build students' capacity and human resource skills," said the Vice-Chancellor.
