Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved a proposal to launch a ten-year national manufacturing initiative to make domestic industry globally competitive. Chairing a meeting of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) on Friday, he also approved a suggestion for launching a manufacturing competitiveness mission to ensure time-bound implementation of the policies recommended by the council.
Apex mechanism
It was decided that the policy work of various Ministries related to the manufacturing sector would be coordinated through an apex mechanism on the lines of the existing Trade and Economic Relations Committee and that the NMCC would periodically review the implementation of its recommendations by the various stakeholders.
Upgrading institutions
The meeting decided that the Centre would take up with the State Governments the issue of upgrading and increasing training institutions for the blue-collar, skilled and semi-skilled workers. It recognised the urgent need to qualitatively and quantitatively improve the supply of labour force and decided to encourage the States to promote public-private partnership in industrial training institutes.
