GULBARGA: The Gulbarga District Untouchable Communities Mahasabha has requested Governor T.N. Chaturvedi to delete the names of those communities that did not merit reservation, from the list of Scheduled Castes. Chairman of the Maha Sabha and Vice President of the Republican Party of India Shivaram Moga told presspersons here on Saturday that only Dalit communities such as Holayas, Madiga, Samagara, Dhor and Chammar deserved to be in the list of Scheduled Castes as they had suffered for centuries under the caste system in the country. Taking into account the plight of these communities and denial of educational and job opportunities, Dr B.R. Ambedkar provided reservation to them in the Constitution.
Deprived lot
However, successive governments, particularly when Mr Devaraj Urs was the Chief Minister, other communities such as Banjara, Bhovi, Waddar and Beda Jangama were included in the Scheduled Castes' list without any valid reason. Mr. Moga said that almost all benefits of reservation policy were cornered by these communities, while the deserving Dalit communities in the SC list went without them.
Legal recourse
If the Government fails to remove the names of other communities from the list of Scheduled Castes, Mr. Moga said the Mahasabha will seek legal remedy to undo the damage done in the reservation policy.
