Prakash clarifies on recruitment

DAVANGERE: Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash has said that the Government has made preparations for recruitment to the post of tahsildars.

In an informal chat with presspersons at Nandigavi village in Harihar taluk on Sunday, Mr. Prakash said former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda had earlier opposed the idea of the Government to make recruitments directly. Mr. Prakash said he has spoken to Mr. Gowda and explained to him the benefits of such a move. Mr. Gowda has agreed to it. — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering has invited applications from candidates having Class I Bachelor's or Master's degree in CSE/ISE with adequate teaching experience for appointment to the posts of 30 guest faculty in the department of Computer Science and Engineering, UVCE. BANGALORE: K.M. Srinivasa Gowda of the 1962 batch, Bangalore Medical College (BMC), was recognised as distinguished alumnus of BMC in the recently concluded golden jubilee celebrations of the college. A pathologist by profession, he is also the former Registrar of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. — Staff Reporter

Arrested

SIRSI: Sirsi police arrested Shashidhar P. Hegde and Nagapati G. Hegde on Friday in connection with a kidnapping case registered 17 years ago and produced them before the court.

The two are alleged to have kidnapped Niranjan, son of S.V. Kamat, an industrialist, from St, Anthony School in 1989. They had demanded a ransom of Rs. 3 lakhs from Mr. Kamat.

The two had appealed to the Supreme Court in 1999 against the High Court sentence. However, the Supreme Court rejected their appeal on October 13, 2004. Since then, the two were absconding. — Correspondent

Dharna threatened

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board Employees' Association has urged the Government to appoint a competent officer as the Board's Managing Director following the High Court strictures against the Government.

Association president V.N. Halakatti, in a press release, warned that the association will launch an indefinite dharna in Bangalore if the Government fails to appoint a suitable person or goes on appeal challenging the single-judge order quashing the appointment of B. Sreenivasa Reddy as the board's Managing Director. — Staff Correspondent

Two killed in clash

Raichur: Hanumaiah and Durugappa, sons of Bassanna Naik, were hacked to death after a clash with Thippanna and Nasi Durgappa in Donmardi village of Manvi taluk on Saturday.

The police said Hanumaiah and Durugappa had a dispute with the accused over the issue of draining water from the roof of their house in the village. Both had clashed in November 2004 and since then, there were minor clashes. On Saturday night, Hanuamaiah and Durgappa, who were in an inebriated condition, indulged in altercations with Thippanna and Nasi Durgappa and tried to attack them with sticks. Both were killed in counter attacks. The Sirwar Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

BELLARY: A woman labourer died on the spot and three sustained injuries when they were hit by a lorry in Balaji Plastics near the industrial area in the outskirts of the city on Sunday. According to the police, the cleaner of the lorry was driving the vehicle and it knocked down four women labourers who were working on the premises of the firm. The deceased was identified as Sanjeevamma. The injured have been admitted to the VIMS Hospital here. The Traffic Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Student dies

DAVANGERE: A first-year PUC student was killed while another sustained serious injuries when a truck hit them on Harihar-Shimoga Road near Srikantha Theatre in Harihar on Friday. D. Shwetha (18) and her friend U. Prathima were returning home on a scooter when the truck hit their vehicle. The police have arrested the driver and owner of the truck and investigation is on.

Stay order issued

SIRSI: The Sirsi Sessions Court has issued a stay order on the setting up of a solid waste recycling plant at the forests near Sadashivalli and Goudalli. The people of the two villages had appealed to the court against the setting up of the plant fearing pollution to water bodies.

Debate contest

MYSORE: The Centre for Women's Studies, University of Mysore, will conduct an inter-collegiate debate competition in English, "Is 33 per cent reservation for women necessary" on Wednesday; and a debate in Kannada on Thursday on "Gender bias a result of prominence to male child". The contest will be held at the Centre for Women's Studies Lecture Hall at 11 a.m.
