50 persons hospitalised for nausea

TIRUNELVELI: More than 50 persons were admitted to hospitals in and around Paavoorchathram on Saturday after they complained of nausea, said to have been caused by contaminated drinking water.

Some residents of Chellathaayaarpuram were suffering from diarrhoea. A team of doctors of the Health Department rushed to the village and extended medical assistance.

Since the officials suspect that contaminated water might have caused the problem, efforts were on to supply protected drinking water to the villagers. - Staff Reporter

New Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare

CHENNAI: Supriya Sahu, Additional Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, has been transferred and posted as Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare. She will replace Kannegi Packianathan, who is holding additional charge.

An official release said here on Sunday that Mohan Verghese Chunkath, formerly Special Commissioner for the Disabled, has been posted as Special Commissioner of Social Welfare in place of Ruolkhumlien Buhril, who is holding additional charge.

R. Bhaskaran, formerly Commissioner of Horticulture and Plantation Crops, will be the new Special Secretary to Government (Labour and Employment). He replaces Ramesh Kumar Khanna, who has been transferred. The officer will function under the control of the Secretary to Government (Labour and Employment).

A.M. Kasiviswanathan, formerly Secretary, State Election Commission, has been posted as Special Secretary to Government (Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries). He will function under the control of the Secretary of the Department, the release said. - Special Correspondent

Murder for gain

CHENNAI: A 25-year-old Nepali man was found murdered in his room in Teynampet here. Shyam Bahadur Gurung, who worked as a watchman, was allegedly murdered by his roommate Abu Pasomatri (25) of Assam. Shyam, Abu and four others, who shared the room in Tiruvalluvar Salai, are from Nepal and Assam. On Saturday night, the deceased and Abu were alone in the room. The murder was found by one of the roommates who returned on Sunday. He found the door open and briefcase broken. Police said Rs. 58,000 in cash was missing. — Staff Reporter

550 toilets in 100 hours

PERAMBALUR: The residents of Venbavur village panchayat in Veppanthattai block near here took up a massive work of constructing individual toilets at all residences.

A survey showed that only 75 out of total 625 houses in the village panchayat had individual toilets. A programme was conducted in the village, explaining the importance of personal hygiene and the need for the using individual toilets.

All the 550 villagers decided to construct toilets in their houses within a record time of 100 hours. The unit cost of the toilet was Rs.740 including a subsidy of Rs.500 released by the DRDA.

Free dhotis, saris distributed

PERAMBALUR: Free dhotis and saris would be distributed to 3.24 lakh families in the district. A function was organised on Saturday at Padalur to mark the inauguration of the free dhothis and saris

scheme.

Inaugurating the scheme, the Deputy Speaker Varagur A. Arunachalam said over three crore people would benefit from this scheme.

The free dhothis and sarees would be distributed through the ration shops in the respective places till March end, he added. The District Collector D. Vivekanandan, administration officials and local bodies representatives participated.

Plea to expedite gauge conversion

PUDUKOTTAI: Members of the Advani Peravai staged a dharna in front of the Pudukottai railway station on Sunday demanding speedy implementation of the Tiruchi - Pudukottai broad gauge conversion work.

Led by the Peravai, state president, C. Palaniappan, the members demanded allotment of more funds for the Pudukottai - Manamadurai phase.

Tiruchi: Water level at the Mettur dam stood at 114.79 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 2,817 cusecs and the outflow, 6,000 cusecs. By Staff Reporter

Keralite commits suicide

Nagercoil: A Keralite committed suicide at Kanyakumari on Saturday.

According to police, Dinesh (21) of Nedumancadu in Kerala came to Kanyakumari and stayed for more than two days in a lodge.

Meanwhile, the room boy found him hanging from a ceiling fan in his room after locking the front door from inside. The police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. — Staff Reporter

Baby killed in road accident

Nagercoil: A two-year-old baby was killed in a road accident on Sunday.

Gracy, wife of Mani of Kanchambarampu near Nithravilai, was going to Virivilai to meet her relative in an autorickshaw along with her child Akila.

The autorickshaw driver lost control of the vehicle and dashed against compound wall of a house.

The critically injured Akila died on way to Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Draft poll rolls to be published on Jan. 23

Nagercoil: The draft poll rolls of Kanyakumari district will be published on January 23 and they will be displayed in the polling booths, post-offices, taluk offices and panchayat offices till February 6, said Collector Sunil Paliwal.

The names would be read out in gram sabha meetings on January 26. Those who have attained the age of 18 years on or after January 1 can apply for inclusion of their names between January 23 and February 6 using form number 6.

They can use form number 7 for deletion, form number 8 for correction and form number 8A for change of constituency.

The voters should submit filled application forms at the government office where the list was displayed. Special camps will be held on February 4 in this regard. — Staff Reporter

Multi-media campaign

Nagercoil: Various government departments and public sector undertakings will organise multi-media campaign here for four days.

The first day would be dedicated to farmers, second day to labourers, third day to youth and final day to women, said the member of Lok Sabha, A.V.Bellarmine.

Presiding over a meeting held here on Friday, he said that interface session, cultural programmes, recognising services of the best performers in various fields and awarding mementos will form the part of the programme.

Union Ministers including S. S. Palanimanickkam, E. V. K. S. Elangovan, S. Velu and Sudarsana Nachiappan of Congress will participate in the campaign but the date will be announced later. — Staff Reporter

Power shutdown

TIRUNELVELI: According to O.S. Mohammed Sheriff, Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, power supply will be affected on January 17 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the following areas as maintenance works will be carried out at Old Pettai sub-station: Tirunelveli Town, Old Pettai, Gandhi Nagar, Pettai, Thiruppanikarisalkulam, Vaagaikulam, Kunnathur and Pettai Industrial Estate. — Staff Reporter

Tense situation in Kangeyam

ERODE: Tense situation prevailed in Kangeyam on Sunday when a flag post belonging to the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (party of cine actor Vijayakanth) was found destroyed. Police pickets were posted in important road junctions in Kangeyam.

Woman charred to death

ERODE: An aged woman was charred to death when her thatched hut caught fire. The police said that Angalammal (70) of Guruvareddiyur was living alone in the hut. When she attempted to light a kerosene lamp, it accidentally fell causing the spread of kerosene. The fire spread to three nearby huts too. All the four huts were destroyed.

Woman killed in accident

ERODE: A woman was killed when the moped on which she was travelling collided with a bus on Brough Road on Saturday. The police have identified the deceased as Jayalakshmi (45), wife of Subramaniam of VIP Colony, Sampathnagar. Their daughter, Karthikeya, who was travelling in the moped suffered minor injuries.

Grievances day

ERODE: The Superintending Engineer, Erode Electricity Distribution Circle, has said that the monthly grievances day for Erode South Division will be conducted on January 17, at 10.30 a.m. in the office of the Executive Engineer, TNEB, Gandhiji Road.

Seminar held

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council and the National Service Scheme of the CSI Polytechnic College conducted a Village Consumer Awareness Seminar at Donbosco Anbu Illam at Kondappanaickanpatti here recently. Presiding over the seminar, chairman of the council S. Selvam stressed the importance of spreading consumer awareness among people in rural areas. He distributed awareness guides to the students during the seminar.

Celebrated

SALEM: A number of social and voluntary organisations here celebrated the Tiruvalluvar Day. Members of the Tiruvalluvar Makkal Narpani Manndram recited Tirukural and organised a function to remember the poet's contribution to society. Members of Salem Kalai Ilakiya Mandram garlanded the Tiruvalluvar statue.

SALEM: An exhibition of the products manufactured by the self-help groups in Panamarathupatti was organised at Palani Andavar Thirumana Mandapam here recently. Project Officer of Mahalir Thittam R. Saroja inaugurated the expo.
