KOZHIKODE: E.T. Mohammed Basheer, Education Minister, has said that the EDUSAT facilities will be set up in all Government schools in the State by July 31. The Minister was talking at the meeting to discuss the setting up of EDUSAT terminal and school library modernisation in all the schools in the district here on Sunday. The Minister said that he had talks with Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G. Madhavan Nair in this regard in Kochi on Sunday. The Government is considering the idea to acquire equipment for EDUSAT facilities from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The Government is also considering providing funds for aided and unaided schools. The Minister said that some of the schools in Kozhikode have done commendable work in library modernisation. The schools have done well on the book-collection drive. The various committees with people's representatives have been set up. A CD library will have to be set up in all school libraries. Of these, 100 CDs will be on subjects in the SSLC examinations. These CDs worth Rs.30,000 will be provided for Rs.6,000.
Interactive terminals
Interactive terminals as part of EDUSAT programme have been set up at 56 centres. These terminals cannot be set up at all places because of its prohibitive cost. A second channel, exclusively for education programmes available on DTH mode, is being planned. Its equipment can be purchased at a cheap cost.
Library
Lida Jacob, General Education Secretary, said that in the case of aided schools, corporate management schools have taken up library modernisation in a big way. Some of the single management schools are not showing interest and some even if they are interesting does not have enough funds. The fund for this purpose in the current financial year is very meagre. But more funds would be available from next financial year. The idea is to display books on shelves without closed doors so that books are easily available to students. Appropriate furniture has to be bought.
