KANNUR: In the death of the former Kannur University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Rajan the academic circle has lost a scholar and cultural ambassador. Dr. Rajan will be most remembered for his contribution in developing the university into an institution of repute. When he assumed office as the second Vice-Chancellor, the university had no academic bodies. Many in the academic circle here say that Dr. Rajan's major contribution was the constitution of academic bodies. Equally important was Dr. Rajan's initiative to secure University Grants Commission's (UGC) 12-B recognition for the university. "Dr. Rajan was a man with academic vision and he was instrumental in bringing about rapid development in the Kannur University," says M. Dasan, head of the Institute of English and Foreign Languages on the university's Thalassery campus at Palayad. English Literature students of the university recall the literature and literary criticism classes that he used to take during his term in the university. `Towards academic excellence' was his motto. Dr. Rajan, during his four-year tenure, also took initiatives for industry-institution interface to develop the region. The university's research programme for the development of the Malabar region was his brainchild. Semester system in the postgraduate level was introduced during his tenure. Pro-Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan described Dr. Rajan's activities as milestones in the initial phase of the university. The Kannur University Teachers' Collective, Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad and the Students Federation of India, among others, condoled the demise of Dr. Rajan.
