SSA adopts new method to make children creative

Staff Reporter

Activity-based learning will lay stress on individual capacities

Coimbatore: The activity-based learning method adopted by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) will lay stress on individual capacities of students and make them more creative. Likely to be implemented at Government primary schools in Coimbatore district, this learning method aims at a holistic development of the chid rather than a textbook- based approach.

It also enhances the child's thinking process as the teachers evolve innovative methods of teaching, says S. Jayaprakash, City Assistant Elementary Education Officer.

The schools will follow a continuous evaluation method, where in the progress of each child will be marked on the board. Each student's name, daily score and attendance will be indicated on low-level blackboards, so that the teachers can keep track of the child's progress, an SSA official says.

The students will be divided into three groups - one completely dependent on teachers (slow learners), one partially dependent on teachers (average students) and peer-supported group (fast learners helping each other and the slow learners).

The teaching material, also called self-learning material, consists of cards for each subject. Students from Classes I to III will be taught together. The programme will be extended to Classes IV and V soon, Dharmaraj, Media and Documentation Officer, SSA, says.
