MRPS leader calls on APCC chief

Hyderabad : Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi leader Manda Krishna met APCC president K. Keshava Rao on Sunday and appealed to him to fix an appointment with AICC president Sonia Gandhi either during the forthcoming Congress plenary or before it.

Mr. Manda Krishna had earlier threatened to hold `Kurukshetra', a convention of Madigas to disrupt the plenary if his demand for categorisation of SC reservations was not conceded.

Mr. Krishna was closeted with the APCC president for about 45 minutes. - Special Correspondent

Attack on pastor, Christians: 12 held

NIZAMABAD : Twelve persons were arrested on Saturday in connection with the attack on a pastor and three Christians on January 12 and 13 respectively.

Four accused -- Donthula Ravi, Syed Imran, Chiluka Kishan and Are Narender -- were arrested by I town police for alleged attack on a pastor.

Eight others -- Kadere Mohan Reddy, Chakali Purushottam, Mangali Srikumar, Ode Sekhar, Bothe Krishnamohan, Kadere Srinivas, Pujari Kailash and Bodakunti Naresh -- were nabbed in connection with attack on Christians. - Staff Reporter

Haj stampede: one more from State dies

HYDERABAD : The toll of Haj pilgrims from the State in the stampede at Mina in Saudi Arabia has gone up to five with one more woman succumbing to injuries at hospital there.

The Andhra Pradesh State Haj Committee gave the victim's name as Meraj Begum, 40, wife of Syed Aziz Hussain, a resident of Gandhi Nagar.

In another incident, another pilgrim from Rayachoti, Kadapa, Shaik Habeebullah Basha, 34, died of cardiac arrest at Mecca. - Special Correspondent

Row over water release ends

KURNOOL : Irrigation authorities of KC canal has promised to release between 100 and 120 cusecs through the flood gate at the KC canal barrage into the river to ensure supply to farmers of Left Bank villages in Mahabubnagar district.

Following closure of construction vent in the KC canal barrage a fortnight ago, the flow into the river was curtailed causing shortage of water to the downstream people. Farmers from half a dozen villages in Mahabubnagar district represented the matter to Kurnool MP Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy on Saturday seeking his intervention for water release. Farmers' leaders discussed the matter with the MP and officials, who finally resolved to release water into the river to support the crop till March-end.

Central staff plans indefinite strike

HYDERABAD : Thirty-five lakh Central Government employees will launch indefinite strike from March 1 in support of their demand for appointment of the sixth Pay Commission.

Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers vice-president T. Narasimhan said in a press note on Sunday that a decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held in New Delhi. - Special Correspondent

Security beefed up at police stations

KURNOOL: The police beefed up the security at police stations located close to Nallamala forest in Nandyal division following information of possible attack by extremists.

According to reports, the police received information that extremists are likely to blast Chalama railway station and attack on Rudravaram and Mahanandi police station was also feared. Following this heavy force was deployed at the three police stations. - Staff Reporter

ADILABAD : A major fire broke out at four large-sized cotton heaps of the Dalda ginning mill behind the agriculture market yard on Saturday.

Urdu department urged in proposed varsity

KADAPA: Urdu Cultural and Literary Association secretary Sattar Faizi on Sunday sought setting up of an Urdu department in the proposed Yogi Vemana University at Kadapa. In a statement, he also sought arts and science groups in the varsity, as nearly 3,500 Urdu students passed SSC from 26 ZP high schools in the district. He lauded additional allotment of Rs. 5 crores for scholarships of Muslim students and assurance to set up an Urdu literature research centre at Hyderabad. Staff Reporter

Job scheme

KADAPA: All employment guarantee schemes were merged with Andhra Pradesh Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to be launched on February 2, Collector G. Ashok Kumar said on Sunday. Eleven senior district officials were designated as constituency development officers, with effect from January 14, to supervise and assist the district administration, he said in a statement. Nurse suspended

KURNOOL: The Municipal Commissioner placed under suspension a nurse in the Clock Tower Hospital in old city here on Sunday on the charges of dereliction of duties. The nurse, identified as Indira Rajeswari denied admission to a pregnant woman who delivered in the open. Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy rushed to the hospital and ordered an inquiry by the commissioner, who placed her under suspection.
