Adoor Gopalakrishnan to get D.Litt. today

KOTTAYAM: Mahatma Gandhi University will confer a honorary D.Litt. on the filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Monday. Mr. Gopalakrishnan is the third person to be accorded this honour, the first two being the writers Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai and M.T. Vasudevan Nair. The ceremony, which will commence at 10.30 a.m. will conclude at 12.15 p.m., as per schedule. The Chancellor and Governor R.L. Bhatia will lead the ceremony. — Staff Reporter

Alert against chickenpox

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Director of Health Services has asked people to take preventive measures against chickenpox, the incidence of which is likely because of changes in weather. In an official press note here on Friday, he said the viral disease spread fast. The virus came out along with mucus when patients coughed or sneezed. The disease could spread through direct contact with the patients also. — Special Correspondent

Special chartered flight for Hajis

NEDUMBASSERY: Air-India operated a special chartered flight from Jeddah to Kochi on Sunday evening for Haj pilgrims. The flight, AI 3463, with 201 pilgrims on board, arrived at the Cochin International Airport at 5.45 p.m. — A Correspondent

Charge against Gouri

Thiruvananthapuram: The former Janathipadya Samrakshana Samithi working president Kayikkara Babu and vice-president V. Sasidharan have said that party leader and Minister for Agriculture K.R. Gouri had tried to become Chief Minister after unseating the then Chief Minister A.K. Antony. Mr. Babu and Mr. Sasidharan told a news conference here on Sunday that Ms. Gouri had exerted pressure on Mr. Sasidharan to get Leader of the Opposition V. S. Achuthanandan to agree to the proposal and tried to expel him from the party as he did not comply with her bid. Although there was also an offer to pay Rs. 50 lakhs to party MLAs and give Ms. Gouri the post of deputy chief minister, she turned it down, they added. — Special Correspondent

Pier to be renovated

ALAPPUZHA: Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal inaugurated the beautification works of Alappuzha beach on Sunday. The Minister said the Government would take steps to renovate the dilapidated Alappuzha pier. Municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanajan presided over the function. K.S. Man drowned

PATHANAMTHITTA: A 27-year-old man, identified as Vijayaraj, a mason from Nedumangad, was drowned in the Pampa while taking bath at Perunthenaruvi Vallakakdavu in Ranni taluk on Sunday. The body was fished out by the local people later. — Staff Reporter

Stone laid for pilgrim amenity centre

PATHANAMTHITTA: Tourism Minister K.C.Venugopal laid the foundation stone of the proposed Pilgrim Amenity Centre at Malayalappuzha on Sunday. Sky observation programme

Training for the visually challenged

Kozhikode : National Federation of the Blind will conduct a training programme for visually challenged persons as part of its recruitment for its proposed paper-plates manufacturing unit in Kozhikode.

Training will imparted to persons in the age group 18 to 40 years.

Candidates should reach the Kozhikode office of the federation at the Mananchira Tower, M.G. Road at 10 a.m. on January 18, according to a press release here on Friday. - Staff Reporter
