NEW DELHI: Developing countries including India have a very low ratio of mental health professionals and that too concentrated in urban areas, said Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rajesh Sagar at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Training Workshop that concluded here this past week.

Organised in collaboration with consultants of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (UK) on the theme "Emerging Trends in Psychiatric Intervention in Children and Adolescent", the three-day conference recognised major challenges in future to assess and manage psychological problems in children and adolescents.

"The psychological problems related to children and adolescents are steadily increasing and there is growing awareness about the need for training in this specialty area of psychiatry," said Dr. Sagar.

The topics discussed at the workshop included psychiatric assessment of children, adolescents and their families; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; autistic spectrum disorder; stress related disorders; liaison child psychiatry; early intervention in learning disabilities; mood disorder in children; and recent concepts and management.

The workshop saw the participation of over 100 delegates including psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing staff and professionals of child development.

"The training workshop imparted practical tips, skill development, assessment and evaluation methods, hands on experience on the mental health aspects of children and adolescents," said Dr. Sagar.
