Polio drive launched

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit launched the Pulse Polio Immunisation programme January 2006 phase in the Capital by administrating anti-polio drops to children at a function here over the weekend.

Children below five years were administered polio drops on Sunday at various camps organised at hospitals, health centres, schools, railway stations, bus stops and other prominent places.

Speaking on occasion, Ms. Dikshit said Delhi was able to immunise around 26 lakh children in the November phase of the immunisation programme. In Delhi only one case of polio was reported last year, she added.

Dharma Vira remembered

NEW DELHI: Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Sunday celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of late Dharma Vira, former Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Trust Society. On this occasion Kapil Sibal, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, was the chief guest. He distributed special and long service awards to consultants and staff of the hospital. This year's Dharma Vira Award for Excellence was given to Dr I.C. Verma, Chairman, Department of Genetics, and Dr K.C.Mahajan Award for Best Academician went to Dr P.K. Chowbey, Chaiman, Department of Minimal Access Surgery.

IGNOU convocation

NEW DELHI: The 17th convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University will be held on February 18.

While the main function will be held at New Delhi for awarding gold medals, degrees and diplomas to eligible candidates from 3 p.m. onwards, the University would hold convocations through teleconferencing, simultaneously at its regional centres in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Cochin, Dehra Dun, Guwahati, Aizawl, Agartala, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Karnal, Khanna, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Port Blair, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla and Srinagar.

Chest pain not to be ignored

NEW DELHI: Any chest pain of less than 30 seconds in duration should not be ignored, said Dr K K Aggarwal, president of Delhi Medical Association, during a doctors' workshop here over the weekend. Dr Aggarwal said heart attack symptoms might include burning, pain, discomfort or heaviness in the centre of the chest lasting for minutes and diffuse in nature.

Any discomfort which can be pin pointed by a finger is not heart related in origin. Heart discomforts are diffuse in nature. Any discomfort, which is unusual, experienced for the first time or which cannot be explained needs immediate medical attention. The immediate first aid is to chew 300 mg aspirin and to take 300 mg clopidogrel stat. They can reduce the chances of death by 40 per cent.
