Power shutdown

Chennai: Power supply will be suspended on January 17 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work in Flower Bazaar, TV Pet, Muthialpet, Mylapore (East), Whites Road, Gopalpuram, Santhome, Mandaveli and Kottivakkam. Supply will be resumed before 5 p.m. if work is completed.

Painting exhibition

Nandini Voice for the Deprived, a Chennai-based NGO, is sponsoring an exhibition of paintings by R. Udhaikumar, who suffers from muscular dystrophy. The artist cannot walk and finds it difficult to sit; yet his paintings have been appreciated by the likes of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. The exhibition will be inaugurated at 6 p.m. on January 16 and is on till January 30 at the art gallery at Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Montieth Road.

Old students reunion

Pongal celebrated

Sevalaya celebrated Pongal. Agriculturalist Venkatesa Mudhaliyar from Puliyur and Raveendran, president of the Palavedu Panchayat were the chief guests.

Talk on Jainism

Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Shasun Jain College for Women, T Nagar, organised a talk on the "Basic Tenets of Jainism and Candanbala" by Priya Jain, Department of Jainology, University of Madras.

Nepali youth held

The Nandambakkam police have arrested a 28-year-old Nepali youth, S. Jagannath, on charges of trespassing into the premises of the Officers Training Academy and also allegedly assaulting a soldier on duty. Police said the youth tried to enter the OTA premises, when he was intercepted by a soldier. Following a complaint, he was arrested, police added.

Homage to soldiers

A wreath laying function was organised at the Victory War Memorial recently to pay homage to soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Major General B. Sivasankar and several other officers laid wreaths at the memorial as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

General Sivasankar praised the sacrifices made by soldiers. He also highlighted the efforts of the State Government in the implementation of the Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), which would ensure that quality medical care was provided to ex-servicemen and their families.

He spoke about the various welfare measures such as establishment of helplines and construction of welfare complexes.

Free workshop

Satyananda Yoga Centre is organising a free workshop, `ABC of Yoga Education' on January 28 at The Hindu Senior Secondary School, Big Street, Triplicane, for principals, teachers and educationists.
