Opinion leaders urged to mitigate AIDS stigma

FPAI holds orientation programme

CHENNAI: Opinion leaders were urged to help erase the social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS patients at an orientation programme organised in Chennai recently.

The programme was held by the Chennai branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI).

In all, 33 opinion leaders and link leaders extending services in Kannigapuram and Sivalingapuram of K.K. Nagar, Chennai, and paramedics belonging to the FPAI Urban Family Welfare Centre participated.

Ranjini Murugan, president of the branch who presided over the programme, called upon participants to update their knowledge and skills for preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS and eradication of stigma and discrimination.

Dharani Singh, Deputy Director (IEC), Chennai Corporation AIDS Prevention and Control Society, said women deserved more attention in the awareness campaign. He said India had 1.11 lakh persons with AIDS as of July 2005.S. Bagyalakshmi, president, Positive Friend Welfare Association, talked about the stigma and discrimination she faced after she was infected by her spouse. She emphasised the role of link leaders in eradicating stigma. M. Srinivasan, programme officer, FPAI, and Sujatha Natarajan, vice-president participated.
