Valarmathi tells officials to clear storm water drains to prevent flooding

TAMBARAM: Rural Industries Minister B. Valarmathi reviewed the development work completed and those in progress for the financial years 2004-05 and 2005-06 of Pallavaram and Alandur Municipalities. In Pallavaram Municipality, the Minister lauded officials for completing on schedule 264 projects executed at a cost of Rs. 7.2 crore during 2004-05.

She also reviewed the progress of 354 schemes being executed at a cost of Rs. 11.9 crore and instructed officials to complete them before March 31.

She said 39 projects were being carried out in Alandur Municipality at a cost of Rs. 1.17 crore, and they should be completed by March end, an official press note said. Funds for the different projects were allocated from various schemes of the Central and State Governments.

Kancheepuram Collector R. Venkatesan and A.M. Selvam, Regional Director of Municipal Administration, were present at the review meeting.

The Minister said that at present the Pallavaram Municipality was receiving a daily supply of 43 lakh litres of Palar water and told officials that steps had to be taken to augment the supply by another five lakh litres a day. The Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board had agreed to this. Ms. Valarmathi told officials that efforts to clear storm water drains should be given priority so that flood-related problems are reduced during the next monsoon. The Minister asked officials to arrange alternative housing sites for about 100 families living on the banks of the Adyar river in Nandamakkam. She asked officials of the St. Thomas Mount panchayat union to repair the Tirusulam-Moovarasampettai Road within two weeks, the note added.
