Noted poets thrill audience at `mushaira'

Poets from India and Pakistan participate in the event

Hyderabad: The `mushaira' organised as part of the World Urdu conference here on Saturday night was a big hit. Noted poets from both India and Pakistan regaled the audience. Particularly, Amjad Islam and Himayat Ali of Pakistan drew a lot of applause for their poetry.

The mushaira was organised at the Quli Qutb Shah stadium in the Old City by the Urdu daily, The Siasat. Hyderabad's popular poet, Khawja Shoukh, presided. Karnataka Chief Minister, Dharam Singh, who was the chief guest, recalled his student days in Hyderabad and recited the verses of Makhdoom Mohiuddin. Former chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu spoke in Urdu much to the delight of the audience. He favoured setting up of an Urdu research centre in Hyderabad. The mushaira got off to a rollicking start with Khushboo Sharma setting the ball rolling. Then followed Tahar Fraz, Nawaz Deobandi, Rahat Indori and Taqi Abidi of Canada.
