NEW DELHI: Even as the Centre declared on Saturday that the Amar Singh phone tapping issue was a "sting operation for monetary gains in which no political party or political personality nor the Delhi Government, including the Delhi Police, were involved," Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav ordered a parallel probe at the State level. Mr. Yadav and Mr. Amar Singh on Saturday rejected the Government statement saying it was a "cover-up." According to Mr. Yadav, when he learnt that "those behind phone tapping were now probing it," he ordered an inquiry by the Government's Special Task Force. The Chief Minister dismissed suggestions that this was aimed at confronting the Centre. Samajwadi Party leaders had been saying they had no faith in either the Central Bureau of Investigation or the Delhi Government, which is now probing the case. Home Secretary V.K. Duggal told mediapersons that he had now got the latest report from the Delhi Police Commissioner and wished to confirm that the phone tapping was a sting operation conducted by a private detective for monetary and other gains. There was no involvement of any political party or political personality. Mr. Yadav and Mr. Singh had alleged that Congress president Sonia Gandhi was behind the episode.
