IUML to launch drive against `misinformation'

Special Correspondent

Plea to keep `madrasas' closed on January 24

MANGALORE: Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) will launch `Janandolana,' a three-month drive against the misinformation campaign against `madrasas.'

According to the party's State unit general secretary Ahmad Jamal, a well- planned campaign is being carried out in the district by a section of the media.

Despite repeated appeals by the community's leaders, the district administrations of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts have done nothing to put an end to the campaign, he said. `Madrasas' of coastal Karnataka have a history of 1,400 years and nothing has happened that will harm the community, he said.

Launch

`Janandolana' will be launched by the president of IUML's State unit Mirza Ahmad Mehdi; vice-president Sayyed Zainul Aabideen Thangal will preside.

MLA of Manjeshwara, former Kerala Minister Cherkalam Abdulla and other Muslim community leaders will be present on the occasion.

Member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Moulana Mufti Ashraf Ali will also be present during the launch of the drive.

It will begin with a `Dharani Satyagraha' in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on January 24, Mr. Jamal said. He appealed to all `madrasas' to remain closed on the day as a mark of protest.
