Fight regressive attitude, Muslim community told

Staff Correspondent

`Beary community should protect its cultural identity'

  • `It is important to build self-esteem and become self-sufficient through education'
  • `There are many opportunities for those with merit'

MANGALORE: The Muslim community is plagued by regressive postures that are intolerant of progress. The `fatwa' issued by clerics to tennis player Sania Mirza is an example of this.

It is imperative for Muslims to fight such attitudes and strengthen themselves internally, Raouf Ahmad, former vice-president of Zee Cinema, Mumbai, said here on Sunday. He was inaugurating a meet of writers and journalists belonging to the Beary community organised by Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishat here on Sunday.

Even now, the Muslim community constantly thinks about reservations and concessions as the way towards progress.

There are immense opportunities for those with merit, irrespective of any other considerations to progress in life. But to do so, it is important to build self-esteem and become self-sufficient through education, he said.

Irfan Pathan is in the Indian cricket team because of his merit. The Muslim community should inculcate the desire to stand for their rights, Mr. Ahmad said.

Litterateurs Fakir Mohammed Katpady and Boluwaru Mohammed Kunhi, who were chief guests, stresses the need for the Beary community to preserve and protect its distinct cultural identity within the Muslim community. Mr. Kunhi called on the community to develop a qualitative leadership. Mr. Katpady advised them to give up their "inherent diffidence."

    Call for unity

Chairman of Kannada Development Authority B.M. Idinabba honoured Akhila K. and Saeeda, rank-holders from the Beary community in the three and five year LL.B courses respectively.

He advised the community to be united in all efforts, including in their demand for a Beary Sahitya Academy.

President of the Parishat M.B. Abdul Rahman presided over the function. Umar U.H. welcomed the gathering.
