Streamline traffic

The High Court considered a letter from a judge as a writ petition on traffic hazards and gave directions making helmets and fastening of seatbelts compulsory. The police are also very enthusiastic on implementing these two aspects as they concern an ordinary law abiding citizen without considering the actual hazards created by drunken driving, careless and rash driving and violation of traffic rules like jumping the signals. Orders are passed and implemented only by those who never travel by two wheelers.

Helmets is considered necessary in countries where there is lane traffic prescribing a mandatory high speed. In the city, where changing to even third gear is a great luxury in view of the traffic snarls, it is rather funny to make wearing of helmets compulsory. Yet it is implemented because it is a middle class society's vehicle and will fetch some profit for the manufactures of the helmets. There will be least resistance from even elected representatives as they also do not use two wheelers!

If only the police instead of levying penalties, concentrates on regulating the traffic and punish those indulging in thwarting traffic rules and the Transport Department show some strictness in issuing licenses, there will be definite improvement.

Crackdown on traffic violators

It was astonishing to read that out of 100 challans levied by the Traffic Police on those who violated traffic rules, 90 were graduates, 7 were doctors, and 3 were postgraduates ( The Hindu , dated 9.1.2006). It shows the majority of daredevils and violators of traffic rules are from the so called educated class.

Every year the road safety week is observed but safety is as rare as hen's teeth. The traffic police should crackdown on those violating traffic rules by levying heavy penalties.

Chit funds adopting fraudulent methods

There are many Chit Fund and Finance Companies operating in twin cities and other parts of the State. Some of them collect the instalments about one-and-a-half month before they pay the amount to the highest bidder in the auction. These Chit Fund Companies ask for 3 sureties from the higher income group and issue the surety form only after 7 days of the auction. Most of them find fault with the sureties and ask the member to resubmit them with compliance. They delay the payment and harass the member who needs the money to meet his obligations. The chit company utilise the money for nearly 2 months before paying it to the highest bidder.

The government authorities are requested to book such chit fund firms for their attitude in delaying the payment. They should pay the chit amount to members who pay their instalments regularly. The unfair activities of the chit fund companies should be curbed .

There is no clarity in the telecast of Samskar channel for the last six months. I contacted the local area cable operator and C Channel, which is now relaying the channels directly to our area over phone a number of times but there was no proper response. The channel is also not being relayed in most parts of the city.

I request the local cable operator, C Channel to look into the problems and restore the channel at the earliest.

PCC chief's remarks not in good taste

In connection with seeking sponsorship for the AICC Plenary, APCC president K. Keshava Rao reportedly stated that if necessary he would write to 30,000 persons seeking funds for conducting the session and was ready to accept Rs. 5 crores if anyone comes forward to sponsor the event.

Being a responsible and top leader of the APCC, I feel he should have not spoken in such a manner even for arguments sake.
