INAUGURATION: T.S. Narayanasami, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian Overseas Bank, lighting a kuthuvilakku to mark opening of the 16th Music and Drama Festival of the Hamsadhwani in Chennai.
CHENNAI. Chairman and Managing Director of the Indian Overseas Bank T.S. Narayanasami on Saturday appealed to the corporate sector to extend a helping hand to the sabhas in promoting art forms, especially Carnatic music. Speaking at the inaugural function of the 16th Annual Music and Drama Festival 2006 held by Hamsadhwani here, he referred to the efforts made by sabhas in preserving the traditional Indian music, organising concerts in Chennai during the Tamil month of Margazhi. He urged the corporate sector to step in and patronise the sabhas in organising the biggest festival of music and dance in the country. Referring to the IOB's assistance to such efforts, he said, "We give back to society what we derive from it." Industrialist P.Obul Reddy complimented Hamsadhwani on its initiative in holding a music festival for Non-Resident Indians (NRI). The organisation had grown from strength to strength in a short span of time, thanks to dedicated efforts made by the office-bearers. There had been a complete understanding between the sabha functionaries and rasikas in promoting classical art, he said. Chief Executive Officer of the India Cements Sugars L. Sabaretnam commended the functionaries of Hamsadhwani for showing special interest to honour veteran musicians while encouraging young talents.
