Anjali Gupta to meet Girija Vyas

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Girija Vyas has called Indian Air Force Flying Officer Anjali Gupta, who was recently ordered for dismissal (cashiering) by the General Court Martial (GCM), for a meeting on Monday.

The meeting has been called in response to Ms. Gupta's letter accusing the IAF of not taking proper steps to look into the charges of sexual harassment made by her against three officers.

The meeting will be held in the office of the chairperson in New Delhi at 11 a.m., Ms. Gupta told The Hindu from New Delhi.

In her letter, Ms. Gupta said that she had pointed out that the IAF had not set up a committee to redress her complaint against Squadron Leader. R.S. Choudhary, Wing Commander V.C. Cyriac, and Air Commodore Anil Chopra.

This was necessary as per the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court for dealing with charges of sexual harassment in work places. The IAF, in response to the notice by the Commission, had assured of setting up the committee, Ms. Gupta said.

She said the Court of Inquiry team, headed by Air Marshal Bandopadhya, which was set up to look into the charges, was not "a committee" as defined by the Supreme Court.

Moreover, the inquiry team, which submitted its report in September 2005, did not provide adequate opportunity to her to defend the charges.

"I will explain to Ms. Vyas about the circumstances that prevented her from appearing before the inquiry team," Ms. Gupta told The Hindu .

Ms. Gupta said she had filed the pre-conformation petition against the order of the GCM dismissing her service of the IAF on finding her guilty of charges of insubordination, irregularity and indiscipline on December 8, 2005.

The petition was filed before the Chief of Air Staff on January 9, she said.
