Sadasiva Reddy is State Bar Council chairman

Promises to work for welfare of advocates


  • `Council is in favour of starting a scheme for helping advocates get medical treatment'
  • Advocates' Academies to be set up in every district


    BANGALORE: Y.R. Sadasiva Reddy and Mohan A. Limbikai took over as Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the Karnataka Bar Council on Sunday. Both affirmed to work towards the welfare of advocates.

    In a meeting held on Sunday, the 25 newly-elected members of the State Bar Council and the Advocate-General, B.T. Parthasarathy, the ex-officio member, unanimously chose Mr. Reddy for the chairman's post.

    Mr. Limbikai was declared vice-president on January 11. The members elected B.D. Hiremath, former vice-chairman, as the representative of the State Bar Council in the Bar Council of India. Talking to reporters, Mr. Reddy said the council is committed to the welfare of advocates. He said it will work out modalities for increasing the compensation amount for death of an advocate from Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 5 lakhs. The council will set up Advocates' Academies in every district to update advocates about legal issues.

    On a question whether the State Bar Council favours reforms in the present election process that was questioned by a section of advocates, Mr. Reddy said the present process is as per norms prescribed by the Bar Council of India.

    However, a committee will be set up for reviewing the present process.

    Earlier in the meeting Mr. Limbikai sought support of the members in the council's initiatives for advocates welfare. K.N. Subba Reddy and other members spoke.
