KOCHI: Former Chief Minister and Congress Working Committee member A.K. Antony has said that the United Democratic Front (UDF) will be able to come into power in the coming Assembly elections if the Congress leadership is ready to go ahead after correcting the mistakes committed earlier. Speaking after inaugurating a party leadership training camp held at Vaduthala here on Sunday, Mr. Antony said that the past mistakes should be corrected taking the sentiments of the public into consideration. He reminded the Congress workers that appeasing the leadership will in no way help in obtaining seats in the coming Assembly polls. The only criterion for allotment of seats in the Assembly polls will be acceptance by the people. The all-India leadership of the Congress had very strict norms regarding such issues, he said. There was no question of any compromise on this. The party can survive only if those who have real support and approval of the public are fielded as candidates, he said. Mr. Antony called upon the Congress workers to work towards strengthening the party by increasing the support of the people. The Congress workers should intervene in the problems faced by the people in their day-to-day life. He said that the UDF can come to power in the State again if the leadership is ready to go ahead by reading the writings on the wall, learn lessons from the people and by correcting any mistakes committed in the past. Mr. Antony pointed out that those who were crying hoarse that the Congress will cease to exist soon were being proved wrong as the relevance of Congress was increasing at the national level. At the same time, the Left parties were regressing from their earlier standpoints as revealed by the Kerala March led by CPI-M secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. K.V. Thomas MLA presided over the meeting. P.C. Chacko, Ludy Luis MLA, DCC president K.P.Dhanapalan, KSU District president Hyby Eden, Congress leaders M.O. John, Leno Jacob, T.J. Vinod, Laly Vincent and Lisie George spoke.
