Shekhawat undergoes laproscopic surgery

New Delhi: The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, on Sundayday underwent laproscopic surgery and his condition is stated to be stable.

A team led by Prof. Ashok Hemal of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) performed the surgery, a release here said.

The Vice-President was earlier admitted to AIIMS for treatment of a minor problem in his bladder.

AIIMS Director Dr. Venu Gopal and Mr. Shekhawat's son-in-law and Rajasthan Industries Minister Narpat Singh Rajvi were also present during the operation.

Mr. Shekhawat is likely to be discharged from the hospital in a day or two, the release added.

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has wished his deputy a speedy recovery and long life.

Chief Justice hails Metro

New Delhi: The Chief Justice of India, Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, on Sunday travelled on the Delhi Metro and thanked its users for maintaining it so well.

He also complimented E. Sreedharan, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), who accompanied him during his trip from Karol Bagh to Shastri Park, and his entire team for their achievement, a DMRC release said.

Justice Sabharwal was also accompanied by other Supreme Court judges namely Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice Arun Kumar, Justice A.K. Mathur, Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice G.P. Mathur, Justice P.K. Balasubramanayan, and Justice R.V. Ravindran.

At Shatri Park the judges observed the Metro Control Centre.

Man flees from custody

NEW DELHI: An accused in a case, who had recently surrendered in the High Court, fled from police custody when he was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for medical examination this past Tuesday.

The accused, Sanauti Punj, was wanted in connection with a civil suit. It is learnt that during the proceedings at the Tis Hazari courts, Sanauti had committed some mischief after which the matter was referred to the High Court.

On Tuesday, Sanauti surrendered before the court, after which he was handed over to the custody of Sub-Inspector Subhash Chand and Constable Vinod for medical examination before being sent to judicial custody. Sanauti was taken to X-ray examination, following which he was supposed to undergo some more tests. Getting an opportunity, Sanauti managed to give the police the slip and vanished from the scene.

Worker dies

New Delhi: A worker died after being entangled in the conveyor belt of a steel factory in North-West Delhi on Sunday, police sources said here. Rajkumar (45) got entangled in the conveyor belt in a steel stripes manufacturing unit in Ashok Vihar, they said. Hailing from Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, he was rushed to the ESI Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Girl killed

New Delhi: A two-year-old girl died in South-West Delhi after she accidentally consumed kerosene, police sources said here.

One Rajo, staying in Dabri area, drank a small bowl full of kerosene which her mother had kept aside for some domestic use, they said.

The little girl was rushed to the DDU hospital in a critical condition last evening where she breathed her last.
