Bootlegging gang busted, four arrested

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested by the Operation Cell of the South-West Delhi police for allegedly selling liquor, meant for sale only in Haryana, in the Capital by changing the labels. The police said they were part of the huge bootlegging network allegedly run by Dalbir alias Dalla and his nephew Sandeep alias Mental who operate from Bahadurgarh in Haryana.

An Operation Cell team, under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, K.S. Bhatnagar, had a laid a trap near Jawaharlal Nehru University on Friday and arrested two of the accused who appeared on the scene in a Maruti Esteem car. The police recovered 23 cartons of various brands of liquor and huge quantity of labels ("For sale in Delhi only") from the car which had tinted glasses and was allegedly used in ferrying liquor.

The duo, identified as Deepak Jain and Ram, further revealed the names of their two accomplices, Kali Ram and Dillipun, who were working at their hideout in Sainik Farms.

A raid was carried out at the hideout and the two were arrested along with 94 cartons of whiskey that was for sale in Haryana. In all, the police recovered more than 55,000 forged labels.

According to the police, the main suppliers of Haryana liquor were Dalbir and Sandeep. They used to sell the consignment to one Sunil. In turn, Sunil used to hand over the consignment to Deepak and Ram who would change the labels. Sunil would also supply the labels to Deepak and his accomplice. The duo had hired Kali Ram and Dillipun, both Nepalese nationals, to change the labels.

While the Nepalese nationals would get Rs. 2,000 a month as salary, Deepak and Ram would charge anywhere between Rs. 50 to Rs. 75 per carton from Sunil for changing the labels. They changed labels of about 80 cartons a day and thus earned about Rs. 5,000 every day.

Sunil used to take back the consignments with changed labels and supply them to various outlets on the outskirts of the Capital. Sunil also used to supply the liquor to sansis. Sunil would make huge profits as the liquor meant for sale in Haryana would cost only Rs. 18 for a unit while the same quantity in the Capital would cost about Rs. 45.

The police said Deepak and Ram were unemployed and took up the job after coming in contact with Sunil. Sandeep would supply the consignment from the godowns of Dalbir in Bahadurgarh to Sunil.

Further investigations in the case are on and more arrests are likely.
