NEW DELHI: Every aspect of the 2010 Commonwealth Games here should conform to environment protection norms, legal expert Sushil Salwan has suggested. Only hotels that comply with the norms should be considered for hiring and all transport should use compressed natural gas.

In a letter to Lalit K. Bhanot, secretary-general of the Athletic Federation of India, Mr. Salwan has placed some proposals for being forwarded to the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games as well as the president of the Indian Olympic Association.

He has suggested a total ban on the use of plastic bags and plastic goods.

Even equipment accessories should adhere to environment and ecological norms.

All athletes, their mangers, coaches and foreign delegates including spectators should be urged to plant saplings in specified places. Every village, town and city in India, as well as all Commonwealth countries, should plant 2010 trees during the period of the games.

These suggestions would go a long way in not only protecting and preserving the environment but also fulfilling the main agenda of the International Olympic Committee.

Delhi and the government agencies concerned have said the development of venues and the Games village will include considerations related to microenvironment ecology and other parameters such as air, water and noise pollution.

The International Olympic Committee already made a request to all concerned to re-double their efforts at exploring how to sustain and improve the momentum for environment awareness, Mr. Salwan said in his letter.
