Sewage enters Labour Colony

VIJAYAWADA: Labour Colony in Vidyadharapuram remained flooded on Monday with sewage stagnating on the streets and entering some houses too.

The murky gutter water flooded main roads near Sitara Centre and entered some houses as the open drains got clogged due to indiscriminate dumping of various kinds of solid waste after Sankaranthi. Heaps of plastic bags, banana leaves and clothes stuck the drain, resulting in the gushing of sewage into the streets and houses. Agitated residents blamed the corporation for not constructing a permanent culvert, a demand that was made a decade ago.

The residents said this was a perennial problem. Whenever the drains got jammed, the drain water enters their houses. Heavy downpour also leads to drains getting clogged. A permanent culvert, they said, was the only solution. The locals said while the corporation had taken up other works such as laying roads and drinking water requirements, it failed to solve the culvert issue.

Officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, local corporator and legislator visited the affected areas and pressed the sanitary staff into service to clean the drainage line. The sanitary workers struggled to ease the drain on Sunday but finally cleared it only by Monday afternoon when the engineering staff of circle I too joined the operation.

VMC Executive Engineer (Circle I) M. V. Suryanarayana said that tenders were finalised for construction of a box culvert, replacing the present pipe drains and the work would be grounded very soon. "The box culvert will be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 80 lakhs and the work will be completed in nine months," he said.
