Toms triumphs

Honolulu: Two months after surgery to correct a rapid heart rate, David Toms eased to a five-shot victory at the Sony Open on Sunday.

Co-leader overnight with fellow American Chad Campbell, the ice-cool Toms fired a five-under-par 65 to finish at 19-under 261. In dazzling sunshine at Waialae Country Club, the 2001 U.S. PGA Championship winner birdied two of the first three holes to take control of the tournament and never looked back after that.

Meanwhile, India's Arjun Atwal played his worst golf of the week and a poor final round of two-over 72 to finish tied 42nd, along with India-born Swede Daniel Chopra.

The par-four 15th turned out Atwal's bane as the Orlando-based Indian double bogeyed there and followed it dropping another shot on the 16th, while his birdie-less front nine also included a bogey on the fourth.

The birdies on the 12th and 18th were the only highlights of Atwal's show and after rounds of 70, 69, 69 and 72, the Indian was placed tied 42nd.

Daniel Chopra carded one-under 69 to total 280 and join Atwal. His final round show included a treble of birdies on the fifth, eighth and 16th but bogeys on the sixth and 17th held him back.

Earlier, Volvo Masters of Asia champion Shiv Kapur had missed the halfway cut in the tournament. — UNI
