Gastroenteritis in prison under control
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Health Department authorities have claimed the outbreak of gastroenteritis in the Tiruchi Central Prison was under control by Monday evening.
A team of experts from Chennai were deputed to Tiruchi to supervise the treatment. While the outbreak is said to have occurred over three days from January 13, it was on Sunday that the inmates had to be admitted to hospital as they were suffering from acute diarrhoea. All of them have been treated for gastroenteritis and given re-hydration salts. The authorities denied any outbreak of cholera in the prison, attributing the illness to acute diarrhoeal disease.
However, there were reports of some inmates testing positive for vibrio cholera.
