Sonia wants law to take its course, says Congress

Neither she nor party interferes with the functioning of CBI or Ministry: spokesman

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday said its president Sonia Gandhi always maintained that the law must take its course in the Bofors case.

The party was responding to questions on the controversy over defreeezing of the London bank accounts of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi and whether she was aware of the move by the Law Ministry.

Party spokesman Anand Sharma said that even earlier Ms. Gandhi asked the National Democratic Alliance Government to act and bring to book anybody who was allegedly involved in the Bofors payoffs case.

In 1998, when she campaigned for the Congress in the general elections, Ms. Gandhi made her position clear on Bofors.

As for the recent developments, Mr. Sharma said neither the Congress president nor the party interfered with the functioning of any Ministry or any government agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Sharma wondered how the Bharatiya Janata Party arrived at definitive conclusions before the Government clarified its position.

He said there were certain questions and suggested that the party await an official response to its charge.
