Anand draws with Aronian

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand was involved in a well-fought draw with World Cup champion Levon Aronian but it was Michael Adams who caught everyone's attention when he brought down World champion Veselin Topalov in the second round of the Corus chess championship at Wijh aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Sunday.

Ukraine's Vassily Ivanchuk took the lead with two points after he defeated Ivan Sokolov in the day's longest match lasting 73 moves.

Anand settled for a 66-move draw in the Closed Ruy Lopez when it was clear that Aronian's lone pawn could do little in an ending involving a rook from each player. For the better part of this game, Anand enjoyed a slight edge and even gained a pawn. But later Anand tried too hard and even ended up a pawn less in the drawn endgame.

The results (second round): V. Anand (1.5) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 0.5); Peter Leko (Hun, 1) drew with Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 0.5); G. Kamsky (USA, 1) bt Boris Gelfand (Isr, 0.5); Michael Adams (Eng, 1.5) bt Veselin Topalov (Bul, 1); Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 1.5) bt Sergey Tiviakov (Ned, 0.5); Loek van Wely (Ned, 1) drew with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 1); Ivan Sokolov (Ned, 0.5) lost to Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 2).

Third round pairings: Ivanchuk-Anand; Topalov-Bacrot, Aronian-Leko; Gelfand-Adams; Karjakin-Kamsky; Mamedyarov-Sokolov; Tiviakov-Wely.
