Bomb explosion during faction feud creates tension

KURNOOL: Tension gripped Kappatralla village in Kurnool district on Sunday night, following a clash between two faction groups. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd which threw two crude bombs and tried to assault the rivals.

According to reports, two persons identified as Bade Saheb and Peddaiah quarrelled over a petty amount. As both belonged to different groups, the supporters of TDP leader Venkatappa Naidu, mainly women, attacked the rival group.

They exploded two crude bombs which hit a wall causing cracks. Additional troops were rushed to the village following the incident.

Political colour

Tension has prevailed in the village since the return of a dozen families to the village after a gap of 30 years. The families, supported by Congress leaders, were opposed to Mr. Venkatappa Naidu. Most of the victim families lost several of their members in the gang wars.

The police were anticipating some trouble since the entry of refugee families and set up a picket with two officers and over 25 men. However, they did not take any proactive measures like house search for crude bombs and other weapons. Sunday night's incident of exploding crude bombs in the presence of police surprised many.

SP's visit

Superintendent of Police B. Malla Reddy visited Kappatralla following the incident of bomb throwing on Sunday night. He went round the village and talked to both groups and warned of severe action in case anything went wrong in the village.

He told The Hindu that the incident was minor and no preplanning went into it. A skirmish among a few individuals was taken seriously because of the tense situation prevailing in the village for some time.

Meanwhile, two groups clashed at Bugganipalli under Bethamcharla police station limits on Monday causing injuries to one person. The police registered a case against both groups.
