`Indiramma' scheme bogged down in politics

Telugu Desam Party accuses Congress of bias in selection of wards

ELURU: The Government's scheme "Indiramma Adarsha Wardulu" proposed to be implemented in the Eluru Municipal Corporation and seven other municipalities in West Godavari district is mired in politics.

Even as the Government and officials claimed that the programme was intended to give a thrust to the underdeveloped areas in the towns and cities, the Opposition TDP accused the ruling Congress of showing bias in the selection of wards. A dharna was staged in front of the EMC office under the aegis of the TDP city leadership criticising the Government for lacking in "transparency'' in implementing the scheme.

Protest registered

TDP members in Bhimavaram and Tadepalligudem Municipal Councils registered their protest against the manner in which the Government was going ahead with the scheme without taking into confidence the council members.

Despite the Bhimavaram Municipality being held by the TDP, even the party's municipal chairperson was not consulted on selection of wards under the scheme, the TDP district general secretary Uppala Jagadish Babu alleged.

In the Eluru Municipal Corporation, 16 out of 50 divisions have been chosen for implementing the scheme. As if giving credence to the allegations by the TDP, all the selected divisions are represented by the Congress.

Survey teams were deployed in these divisions for collection of data relating to supply of drinking water, drainage conditions, housing, power supply and public health.

Dismissing the allegations of bias, local Congress MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas said the scheme would be implemented in all the divisions in the city in a phased manner without giving any scope for politics.
