Mob lathi-charged after violence breaks out in Gulbarga village

Vehicles damaged, arrack sachets set on fire

GULBARGA: The police resorted to lathi-charge at Gogi village in Shahapur taluk of Gulbarga district to disperse a mob that indulged in violence on Monday.

According to reports reaching here, the police arrested a Janata Dal (Secular) taluk panchayat member and 13 others in connection with the violent incidents.

The situation was under control now and additional police forces have been deployed in Gogi as a precautionary measure.

Reports said the trouble started in the afternoon when a group, allegedly led by taluk panchayat member Ramanagouda, who is a close relative of the former Minister Sharanabasappa Dharshanapur, MLA, stopped a jeep carrying arrack for supply to retail vends in the village.

The vehicle was damaged and the arrack sachets set on fire.

Prohibition

People had taken a unanimous decision to introduce prohibition in the village and had banned the sale of arrack and liquor there.

However, despite the ban imposed by the villagers, the sale of arrack continued.

The police, who came to know about the incident, rushed to the spot.

Driver attacked

By the time the police arrived, the mob had damaged the jeep and set fire to the arrack sachets. They stopped another jeep carrying arrack sachets and attacked the driver and cleaner of the vehicle.

When the situation seemed to go out of control, the police resorted to lathi-charge, the reports said.
