Protest against markings on Bandar road

Staff Reporter

MEASURE OF TROUBLE: Officials mark buildings opposite Raghavaiah park.

VIJAYAWADA: VMC on Monday encountered resistance from owners and tenants of shops on the first stretch of the Bandar road from Police Control Room to Raghavaiah park to the widening of the road to 100 feet.

Even as staff began marking buildings, some owners and tenants gathered at the Raghavaiah park and held up the traffic for some time, protesting against the exercise.

The VMC officials tried to explain to them that the decision was in tune with what they (traders) had agreed to in the meeting with district Collector Navin Mittal some time ago. But the owners and tenants denied having agreed to the widening of the road to 100 feet. They said they were never party to any such arrangement with the district Collector, as they have all along been demanding the widening to not more than 80 feet or 90 feet.

The situation eased and traffic was cleared only after ACP (traffic) intervened.

But the protest did not deter the VMC officials from completing their job. By the end of the day, VMC staff marked the buildings on either side of the road up to Besant road and said they would be able to complete the marking upto the Ranga statue junction by Tuesday. The actual demolition of the buildings would begin once Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar gives the go-ahead.
