The five-day revenue district school festival that concluded at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School here on Sunday stood in sharp contrast with the similar annual district school festivals held in previous years. Some say that the school festival this time was deprived of something that made such events interesting. But even those who pity the loss of that `something' admit that the school fete has been safeguarded from unhealthy practices that crept in it. The amended youth festival manual proved the best answer to the tendency to go for appeals against decision by judges assigned to give marks to participants in each item in the festival. The greatest achievement of the new changes is the drop in the cost of preparing a student to participate in the contests. Till last year, a parent spent more than Rs.4 lakhs to prepare his/her son/daughter for winning in different items to ensure Kalapratibha/Kalatilakam title. Scoring more points in the school fete is no longer a pie in the sky for students whose parents could not afford that much.
