Anand crushes Vassily Ivanchuk

NEW DELHI: Viswanathan Anand produced another flamboyant performance with black pieces and crushed overnight leader Vassily Ivanchuk in just 28 moves to wrest the lead with 2.5 points after three rounds of Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Monday.

The day also saw World champion Veselin Topalov beat Frenchman Etienne Bacrot while Adams went down to Boris Gelfand.

Also, Sergey Karjakin defeated comeback-man Gata Kamsky.

Humpy (1.5 points) suffered her first loss when German Arkadij Naiditsch proved stronger with white pieces in 33 moves.

The results:

Third round: Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 2) lost to V. Anand (Ind, 2.5); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 2) bt Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 1.5); Levon Aronian (Arm, 1) drew with Peter Leko (Hun, 1.5); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 1.5) bt Michael Adams (Eng, 1.5); Sergey Karjakin (Ukr, 1.5) bt Gata Kamsky (USA, 1); Shakhriyar Mamdyarov (Aze, 1.5) drew with Ivan Sokolov (Ned, 1); Sergei Tiviakov (Ned, 1) drew with Loek van Wely (Ned, 1.5).

Fourth round pairings: Sokolov - Anand; Leko - Ivanchuk; Kamsky - Aronian; Adams - Karjakin; Bacrot - Gelfand; Wely - Topalov and Mamedyarov - Tiviakov.
