Goa to encourage planting of jatropha for bio-diesel

PANAJI: The Goa Government has decided to encourage panchayats and educational institutions to take up plantation of jatropha trees in a big way as Government intended to promote it as an alternative fuel.

Launching "Save Oil and Gas" fortnight at a function organised under the joint auspices of HPCL, Indo Burma Petroleum, Bharat Gas and other oil companies on Monday, Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane said bio-fuel from jatropha fruits ill also help control pollution.

M.B. Ingole, Sr. Regional Manager, LPG, HPCL; K.L. Utaikumar, Deputy Manager, Sales, Indo Burma Petroleum; K. Shrikant, State Level Coordinator for IOL, were present.

Mr. Rane also stressed the need for judicious use of oil and gas and said that the drive against indiscriminate use of the fuel should be made into a people's movement.

Alternative energy

He advocated the use of alternative forms of energy such as solar energy and bio-diesel to save on petroleum.
