Baloch rebels getting outside aid: Musharraf

B. Muralidhar Reddy

Says they are engaged in terror activities

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday reiterated his allegation that people of a country from "outside" were aiding and abetting subversive elements in Balochistan province and declared that Islamabad would deal with such forces.Addressing people on the State-run television, Gen. Musharraf termed the "involvement of another country" in the affairs of Balochistan as serious. He pointed fingers at the "selfish" tribal chiefs and feudals in the province for the unrest and said his regime was determined to establish the writ of the State.

Gen. Musharraf chose not to name any country and said, "we all know what I am talking [about]."

In his recent interview to a television channel, Gen. Musharraf alleged involvement of India in the disturbances in Balochistan and maintained that Pakistan had proof of this.

The situation in Balochistan was one of the several subjects Gen. Musharraf focused in the course of his hour-long address. He said the Government was determined to go ahead with the construction of all major dams, including the controversial Kalabagh dam by the year 2016.

Gen. Musharraf emphasised that the current operations in Balochistan were being undertaken by the Frontier Constabulary and not the Army.

Gen. Musharraf said the day he went to Kholu to announce a developmental project, miscreants fired rockets and the following day the aircraft in which the Inspector-General of the Constabulary was travelling was fired upon injuring him.
