Diplomatic Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Saudi King Abdullah will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations. His four-day visit "would substantially strengthen bilateral ties and raise them to a new height," an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.
India-Saudi trade exceeded $8.7 billion in 2004, with New Delhi buying 25 million tonnes of crude from Riyadh worth $6.2 billion that year.
The king will receive an honorary doctorate from Jamia Millia Islamia here.
Three Prime Ministers are also currently visiting India Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Czech Prime Minister Jiri Paraoubek.
The three Prime Ministers are scheduled to meet a range of Indian leaders in New Delhi.
While Mr. Ahern will be in India till January 21, the Dutch leader returns on January 20.
