AMARAVATHI (GUNTUR DT.): The Kalachakra ended formally on Tuesday with the Dalai Lama disfiguring the sand mandala and his followers immersing the sacred sand in the Krishna. The Buddhist leader, however, did not step into the Maha Chaitya compound during the fortnight of his stay here, though the Archaeological Survey of India had made all preparations to receive him and his followers for special prayers. The ASI had renovated the Maha Chaitya and spruced up its surroundings at a cost of Rs. 20 lakhs on a request from the organisers of Kalachakra to enable 50,000 Buddhists to render special prayers and light candles. The Dalai Lama left for Gannavaram airport after hurriedly disturbing the sand mandala and the district officials and politicians along with those from Krishna district gave him a warm send off at the airport.
