Snowfall continues in Himachal

Mercury shows a rising trend in North; Kashmir Valley, Punjab and Haryana receive rain

CHANDIGARH: Heavy snowfall continued in Himachal Pradesh for the third day while Kashmir valley and the plains of Punjab were lashed by rains today as the mercury showed a rising trend. The minimum temperatures continued their upward trend and the low recorded at various places in the region shot by upto nine degrees over normal range.

Bhang in Manali had received 14 cm of snow until 8:30 this morning, while Manali had a rainfall of 25 mm. Solang Nullah (32 cm), Dhundi (93 cm) and Patsio (20 cm) in Himachal also received snowfall. Chandigarh had intermitent rains (17.2 mm) since yesterday and the sky today was also heavily overcast. The night temperature in the city rose to 12.4 degrees Celsius, the Meteorological Department said here. Jalandhar was also lashed by rains and the low there touched 13.8 degrees.

Ambala in Haryana also received light rains and the low there touched 14.3 degrees, up seven degrees while the low at Hisar rose by nine degrees to 14.3 degrees. Karnal recorded seven degrees above normal at 14.4 degrees.

In Punjab, Jalandhar was lashed by rains and the low there touched 13.8 degrees. Amritsar received light rain and the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.2 degrees, up eight degrees.

Ludhiana (13.3) and Patiala (13.6) received showers and the minimum at both places jumped by seven degrees each above normal.

Srinagar (0.5) and Shimla (4.3) also received rains and both recorded three degrees above normal minimum. Delhi recorded a low of 12.8 degrees, six degrees above normal.

Among other places in the region lashed by rains included Nangal Dam area and Balachaur in Punjab and Pandoh, Rampur, Kasol, Sujanpur Thira and Guler in Himachal.

UP cold wave toll 165

Two more cases of death were reported in the last 24 hours taking the toll so far in the State to 165.

According to police, Gorakhpur district accounted for the two casualties. Meanwhile, Varanasi was the coldest division in UP, recording the minimum night temperature. However, several places in UP were relatively warmer with mercury registering at above the normal mark. Varanasi district recorded the minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius. - PTI &UNI
